THE REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA EXPRESSES ITS CONDEMNATION AND REJECTION OF THE FARC
BASED ON THE FOLLOWING EVENT
March 26, 2010. Members of the 29th Front of the FARC tricked a 12-year-old boy into attacking a police station in the town of El Charco in the Department of Nariño in the southwest of Colombia. The minor was given a package to put in his backpack and take to the police station. The package contained an explosive device that blew up when the child was just meters from the police station. The boy died immediately in the explosion and another eight people were wounded.
HARM TO THE CIVILIAN POPULATION
Once again, the FARC has attacked the civilian population, particularly a_ecting the basic rights of children who are a_orded special protection under international law, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Colombian Constitution.
By using an unsuspecting minor to attack a police station, the FARC _agrantly ignores the standards of international humanitarian law that prohibit attacks on civilians or making them targets of an attack. In addition to the material damages to the police station and neighboring homes, this assault also constitutes an attack on the security conditions of the city and its inhabitants.
